1981 Bally Flash Gordon SS

Starting Condition

I picked up this project, non-working, back in October 2024. Good bones but really tired looking. I sorted out all of the electrical problems (blown fuses caused by some questionable wire repairs done to the rectifier board and line filter) and got the machine booted and somewhat flipping (weakly) within a couple of hours. My immediate goal was to get it 95-100% functional before tearing it all down for the restoration. For the most part, that's been accomplished by replacing several flaky lamp sockets, cleaning and adjusting all of the leaf and rollover switches, rewiring the left flipper correctly, and rebuilding the right upper and lower flippers. Of course I'll rebuild the left flipper during the restoration but it works fairly well now already....I had to do the two right ones now just to get them working at all.

Frankly, I'm amazed this boots and plays with these dirty OEM boards. The pin came with an Alltek MPU but the lamp, SDB, and Squawk & Talk boards are original and (cosmetically) have seen better days.

Here's the general plan for the restoration:

  • Hardtop (budget conscious on this restoration, plus I do not want to mess with cleaning up CPR's clearcoat out of several star rollover inserts)

  • New plastics

  • Ibis rails

  • Backglass in great shape, will keep

  • Cabinet repair/repaint with Pinball Pimp stencils

  • Brightwork on all armor, metal bits, and coin door

  • LED conversion with Weebly lamp board

  • Re-cap SBD and Squawk & Talk boards
